Inflatable Senator Stops in Regina

As part of its push for a national referendum on abolishing the Senate, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) brought its three-story-high inflatable senator to “allied territory” today – the province of Saskatchewan - where both provincial political parties support abolishing the Senate.

“Appointing your buddies to the Senate may have been acceptable back in 1913, but it certainly isn’t in 2013,” said CTF Prairie Director Colin Craig. “Canadians need to call their Members of Parliament, sign the petition and demand a national referendum on abolishing the Senate. The status quo should not be an option.”

A poll of CTF supporters in June found 82 per cent support holding a referendum on abolishing the Senate.  Support was even higher in Saskatchewan.

“We purchased this giant inflatable senator look-alike to have some fun while drawing attention to a serious issue,” added Craig. “Canadians need to channel their frustration with the Senate by taking action and speaking out.”

The CTF is encouraging Canadians to sign the petition on Taxpayer.com calling for a national referendum on Senate abolition in conjunction with the 2015 federal election.

The CTF was joined at the press conference by some of its donors and supporters and Saskatchewan NDP Warren McCall.
